Above Doolin...
Above Doolin...

Panorama shot above the village of Doolin, made famous by the Russell brothers in the early 1970's, which was also when I first came here. Gussie, Micho and Pakie Russell. They played the whistle, flute and concertina respectively. Lovely, simple, unsophisticated gentle men...

I remember it was an Easter Weekend and I arrived with my still good friend Brian Murphy - camping - it was the first time in years that it snowed at Easter!!

My abiding memory of that visit to Doolin was of Pakie banging on the door of Gussie O'Connor's Pub on a Good Friday afternoon trying to get in. There wasn't a snowballs' chance in hell of getting into any Pub on Good Friday in the Republic of Ireland in 1974.

I was just 19 years old with long hair down to my elbows and had found Irish trad music...what a find...I also discovered I was Irish...and that this culture was all mine to claim...and I did!
