Mrs Granville - East Wall
Mrs Granville - East Wall

Mrs Granville in her huckster shop in East Wall, Dublin circa 1984.

I went to East Wall with Liam Weldon as we visted a local scavenger-artist Joe Moran. Joe made unique absolutely one off pieces from found wood, brass, metals of all sorts, bicycle parts...the list was endless. A real re-cycler in many different ways.

But as we arrived in East Wall and walked from the bus, Liam found this tiny shop and engaged with the old woman - pictured across - who was sitting in the doorway of the shop, passing the time. Kindheartedly Liam mused about the shop trying to find something to "buy" from the depleted stock. He knew she'd be offended by charity but he wanted to give her "something for herself" while I took her photograph. I don't recall her saying much but there's great dignity about her and the daylight was soft on her gentle though weathered face, which was surrounded by a fur hat and a hand-knitted scarf held together by a single piece of wispy string. This was during summer. Actually the "scarf" is a cardigan with the sleeves wrapped round her shoulders - there's a shiny button visible on the right!

The photo was originated on Black & White film.
